Zumindest hoffe ich so...
Der Reisepass. Vergiss es nicht. Ich glaube zu wissen, dass du bis ende Mai dieses Jahres die Möglichkeit hast (als Tochter eines Finnen) den finnischen Pass zu erlangen. Wenn ich du wäre, würde ich mit beiden Händen zugreifen und das bald ablaufende Angebot annehmen...
Demnächst gibt es hier etwas zu hören. Keine Töne, die die Welt umwerfen, gewiss, aber liebe Töne auf Finnisch und die finnische Sprache betreffend. Und die Stimme deines Vaters...

Mir ist es immer so ergangen, dass ich eine moderne lebendige Sprache in toto lernen wollte. Was nützt es einem, wenn er nur lesen und schreiben kann, aber das Gesprochene weder versteht noch sich selber mittels Worte ausdrücken kann? Nicht viel, finde ich. (Mit den verstorbenen Sprachen ist es anders, selbstredend.)
Also kannst du dich darauf vorbereiten, dass du demnächst auch mit dem 'Sound' der finnischen Sprache konfrontiert wirst... ;-)

I think that all aspects of a language are equally important. Either one masters a foreign language or one doesn't. In other words, it is not enough to be able to read and write in a foreign tongue. Without being fluent in the language as it is spoken one cannot be said to 'master' said language. Whilst learning Finnish, you must needs learn the way it is spoken by native speakers. And I know that you will learn Finnish to perfection. You are exceptionally good at learning languages. There is no denying it. You got those genes from your dad.
And here we encounter a huge problem! The written modern standard Finnish as it is used in respectable newspapers, newscasts and other official media is not the same language that people use in everyday life. But the modern standard Finnish is the starting point. Learning colloquial Finnish follows then naturally on the basis of the standard Finnish.
(I encounter a similar problem with the Arabic language. The MSA - modern standard Arabic - is the standard that is used in the newspapers and in the television. But regionally Arabic is spoken quite differently. As regards spoken Arabic I hold to Egyptian. Why? Due to the huge Egyptian movie industry and the fact that Egyptian movies are viewed all over the Arabian speaking world Egyptian Arabic is widely understood. Hence I try to learn MSA and Egyptian Arabic simultaneously... But this jump into Arabian things has nothing to do with this blog. )
Finnish is interesting but difficult. Still interested?

It is mainly about the Finnish language - sort of an introduction that should facilitate your learning this strange and difficult language. But it is at the same time much more... A meeting place, a contact point, a meaningful forum for the otherwise ailing father-daughter interaction...
(Why English and not German? I don't actually know why I chose English as the language of this instructive blog. Both of us quite naturally and easily converse in German - your German, of course is infinitely superior to mine, but that is not important. Mayhap I chose English, because you are my daughter and your proficiency regarding the English language is exceptional?)
Back to brass tacks, i.e. the Finnish language. The first thing you should do is to get some preliminary facts about the language here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnish_language .
I don't know if there is a good textbook for Finnish learners in France. The book that your mother so violently rejected (I think it was by Hueber-Verlag and was entitled "Finnisch für Sie"?) is not bad.
This is a blog that I created for this single purpose: To help my beloved daughter learn Finnish. As the teaching language I chose English. If you'd prefer rather German, no problem.
An integral part of this language course for Pirjo will be the voice recordings. Those I shall forward to you as MP3 recordings via internet or otherwise.
